After meeting folks at Borders Perrin Norrander and proving that I could write broadcast for a heart-tugging campaign they produce for Oregon Lottery, I caught word they were going to be taking on more of the gaming segment - which is generally more humorous and light. They hinted to me that the client wants more people to play less knowing they will likely not win a whole lot.
Enter, 'Winners Moments.' It's about the joy of winning - just a little.
Oregon Lottery, Scratch It’s - Winner’s Moment - “Pretty Woman”
EXT. TRENDY THRIFT SHOP -- DAY
A WOMAN, 40’s, mom-type, wearing early 90’s high fashion, including a large hat and big sunglasses, struts up to the trendy thrift shop. She carries several shopping bags overflowing with clothes.
INT. TRENDY THRIFT SHOP -- DAY
The woman enters the shop. She tears off her hat and sunglasses. She looks sharp left and then sharp right. Two female retail attendants(GIRL ONE & GIRL TWO), early 20's, with alternative, grunge fashion style, stand at the checkout counter. The WOMAN makes eye contact with GIRL ONE then marches up to her.
Do you remember me?
GIRL ONE looks for confirmation from GIRL TWO. GIRL TWO shrugs her shoulders. She has no idea who the woman is.
I was in here the other day. You wouldn’t wait on me?
You work on commission right?
Big mistake! Big! HUGE! I have to go shopping now.
The iconic intro to the song “Pretty Woman” plays as the WOMAN exits as dramatically as she entered. We are left with the two incredibly confused retail attendants.
Have your winner’s moment.

Oregon Lottery, Video Lottery - Winner’s Moment - “Mirage”
It’s a warm summer day. A car title is signed. Key’s switch hands. A GUY and his BUDDY, early 30’s, average Joes, hop into a shiny black convertible Ferrari. They pop on a deep, bouncing, rap beat and pull out of a used car lot. Time slows. As the GUY and his BUDDY drive through the main strip of town, they bounce their heads to the beat in a self confirmatory fashion while making eye contact with people on the sidewalk.
They pass THREE GIRLS, college-aged, holding shopping bags. The girls react curiously. They pass TWO MEN, seniors, sitting on a bench in front of an ice cream parlor. The men react curiously. A six-year-old BOY and his MOTHER exit the ice cream shop. The GUY accidentally kills the ignition, triggering real-time. From the MOTHER and BOY’s POV, we see that the GUY & his BUDDY are actually in a beat-up old black convertible, an early 90’s Mazda Miata.
The GUY restarts the car. He nods confidently to the MOTHER and BOY. They drive away as winners. Back on the MOTHER and BOY, same curious reaction as the others.
Have your winner’s moment.
